Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan speaks up with a fun blog about New York's opening day pitching woes. The much-maligned Carl Pavano will be the likely starter on April 2 against Tampa. Then again, Joe Torre might go with Kei Igawa. Because of the way the rotation lines up for the season's first game, the hurler of choice won't be Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte. It will most likely be Pavano who hasn't pitched since June '05. Will he be cheered or booed by Bronx fans? ... (more)

Peter's Red Sox Forever is such a good-natured blog you might be fooled into thinking author Peter N. has no strong opinions. That is definitely not the case. Peter proves it with this post about Boston's bullpen. The Sox have made some good offseason moves, but as Peter points out, the job of closer remains unfilled and in doubt. I agree when he says the team should not start the season without a reliable arm for closing. Julian Tavarez? Joel Piniero? I think not. ... (more)

 For Spring Training, David
O'Brien is the main beat writer for the Atlanta Braves. Being in Florida every day of March is difficult work, but hey, someone has to do it. O'Brien does a great job, too, in his Atlanta Journal-Constitution blog which boasts a ton of comments every day from avid Braves boosters. One of the big questions for Atlanta this spring is second base-leadoff hitter. Is Kelly Johnson the right guy? ... (more)

Jeff Passan, baseball writer for Yahoo! Sports, makes a great case in a recent column about Johan Santana being baseball's best pitcher. According to Passan, it's not even close. He says Santana is the "Tiger Woods" of baseball. Hitters around both leagues agree that Johan has the best changeup in the game. It makes proud hitters weak because of its knee-buckling power. ... Extreme veteran TV sportscaster, Jay Randolph, is the new (old) TV voice of the St. Louis Cards on KSDK. In his blog today, co-author AT Hooks takes a stab or two at the venerable Randolph. But his ramblings in Cardinals Diaspora go much wider and deeper than Randolph. Hooks manages to touch on bracketology, Busch field, Nascar and New York-style justice. Read it and weep (tears of laughter, that is).

Talking Chop is a devoted Braves blog authored by Atlanta resident Martin Gandy (also known as "gondee"). Those of us who are sick of winter can be truly envious because gondee is heading for his first-ever trip to spring training. Sunday he will scout the competition in Port St. Lucie, catching the Mets versus Marlins. Later in the week gondee hopes to hang out in Kissimmee and interview a few Braves players. Wish we were there! ... (more)

Pedro Martinez continued his rehab from shoulder surgery Wednesday, working out at the Mets spring training complex. While his team played Boston in Ft. Myers, the 35-year-old Martinez lightly tossed a ball for 10 minutes or so from about 45 feet. For pitchers, at this stage, these are baby steps in a long rebuilding process. To say New York needs Pedro is an understatement, but it will most likely be August or later before he takes the mound at the major league level. ... (more)

Every Cubs fan should read this analysis of Chicago's pitching staff as spring training swings into high gear. The Cub Reporter does yeoman work critiquing years '03 through '06, vis a vis the hurlers of Wrigley Field. Author "Transmission" uses relevant stats to point out that, yes, the Cubs mound corps is deep, but most likely less talented than previous years. For good or bad, Mark Prior will be a key component. ... (more)

You don't have to love grapefruit to appreciate the beauty of spring training in Florida. A good example is Boston's City of Palms park in Ft. Myers. It holds just 7,000 fans and it's ringed by dozens of stately palms. In the modern era, Red Sox tickets are no longer a bargain, but what price can you put on a warm March day in the sun-kissed bleachers? ... (more)
