In interleague play the AL has been far stronger. This holds true in the interesting matchup between Toronto and Washington (Canada's former Expos). Faithfully following the Nationals is Beltway Boys, a lovingly written blog by Farid Rushdi. A devoted fan, Farid posts far from Washington, D.C.— Pocatello, Idaho, to be exact. Another good Nationals blog is District of Baseball, an entertaining thread penned by Jeff. On the AL side of the ball is Jays Nest, a reliable read...sharp and consistent. The main writer for the Jays Nest is David Moro.

No matter which team you root for in baseball, it's a wild, wild west. Both the AL and NL have see-saw battles going: the Rangers and Athletics in the AL; the Padres and Dodgers in the NL. That keeps bloggers busy. One covering the "frolickin' friars" in the NL West is Ducksnorts, a free-wheeling. good-attitude thread chocked full of Padres facts from author Geoff Young. In the AL West, Mr. Blez keeps the home fires burning for the Oakland A's in Athletics Nation, where he invites all fans of the green and gold to congregate and comment.

Yes, there is a notable contrast between two teams such as the world champ Chicago White Sox and last-place Pittsburgh Pirates. Recording the difference is South Side Sox, penned by "The Cheat," and Honest Wagner, authored by Pirates' fan, "Bones." Tune in to these dedicated blogs and see joy and woe juxtaposed daily. White Sox fans expect no less than a wild card invitation to the playoffs. Pirates fans, marooned on a cold baseball planet in a different galaxy, are staring at a 14th consecutive losing season.

From a Phillies' fan's view, the 12th-inning loss Monday to the Red Sox is a heartbreak. Like the Atlanta Braves in the same division, the team from Philly is really struggling. Tom Goodman's Swing and a Miss gives it a sincere shot today with a simple, questioning headline, "Have They Touched Bottom?" On the other side of the emotional planet, Redsock is excellent as usual commenting on the latest Bosox win in The Joy of Sox. Both Swing and a Miss and The Joy of Sox have been featured here before, and both are entertaining blogs worth following.

Two diligent bloggers carried the weight of covering the St. Louis Cardinals recent road trip, and yesterday's final-game sweep in Detroit. Writing about the Cards' six-game losing streak are Viva El Bridos, a witty, reflective blog by L. Boros, and The Gas House Gang, a dedicated, sincere blog that bleeds Redbird-red when the Cards lose, authored by Jeff Mathews. Over in the AL, The Cutoff Man has been creatively following the Detroit Tigers' rise in stature. Law school student Scott Warheit pens a daily news blog that features interesting excerpts from Tigers' media coverage around the country.

These days, there seem to be a growing number of lady bloggers doing a great job covering teams, from the Rockies to the Twins to the Mets. Lisa Gray is one we just discovered. She puts a fun, witty spin on the Houston Astros in her blog, The Dugout. The nation tuned in to watch Roger Clemens' 2006 debut last night. Instead, all of us were dazzled by Minnesota's phenom rookie pitcher, Francisco Liriano. In her Dugout story, Lisa states flatly that she considers Liriano to be "the best pitcher I have seen this year, either league, NO contest."

Two dedicated blogs wrote about the New York Yankees' 5-0 win yesterday over the Phillies in Philly. On the winning side, Alex Belth and Cliff Corcoran pen Bronx Banter, a faithful Yankees' thread following this year's many ups and downs for their team. The Yankees and Red Sox are in a dogfight in the AL East—probably for the whole season. On the NL side of the coin is Swing and a Miss, a fanatic Phillies blog that also sees its team in second place (currently 9.5 games back of the Mets). Author Tom Goodman tells it like it is daily, most recently in the interleague series between his Phillies and the AL Yanks. After this home loss, Tom sums up, it's "Time to Hit the Road."

Every day of the season in the blogging world you have faithful fans writing about a win or a loss. Which is harder to cover? Last night the Marlins beat the Orioles 6-2 behind Dontrelle Willis. For Florida, Craig covers the Marlins in FishStripes, an easy-to-read, reliable blog. His job has been sweet lately as the young Miami team is on a roll. Of course the Baltimore Orioles lost, and the reporting task for the Birds falls on the broad shoulders of Mike Boehm with his colorful blog, Oriole Magic. His headline today was a good one, "Run Over By the D-Train."

Cleveland fan Pat Tabler writes an entertaining blog called The DiaTribe. This weekend he had the misfortune to witness in person the Milwaukee Brewers sweep the Cleveland Indians at Miller Field in Milwaukee. Not only that, but Pat lost money at the game to his father-in-law, a Brewers' fan. I'm not sure if it gets much worse than that. He says, "I'll see if my pride can come back with me or if I left it on the shores of Lake Michigan this weekend."

It's always good to get the local angle. While Cincinnati Reds' fans celebrated, Milwaukee Brewers' fans probably cried in their beer over yesterday's extra-inning loss to the club from Ohio. The Brewers' rookie pitcher, Carlos Villanueva, in his starting major league debut, pitched six shutout innings. But as Rick Braun of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports, that matters little as the brew-crew lost the game to Adam Dunn's 23rd homer of the season in the bottom of the 11th.

An ardent follower of the
Minnesota Twins, Batgirl (featured here before) is one of the most entertaining blogs in the land. Actually penned by novelist Anne Ursu (alias Batgirl), this sassy thread celebrated last night's Twins-win in fine style. The intelligent humor is sprinkled with myriad nicknames and acronyms which spice up the proceedings. For example, Curt Schilling is "Bloody Sock," Torii Hunter is "Sweetcheeks" and Justin Morneau is "The Doctor."

Down in Texas, Rangers' fans rely on John Vittas and Austin Swafford for the scoop in their insightful blog, Baseball Time in Arlington. It's been a good season so far for the home team...after all, they're atop the AL West, one step ahead of the Oakland A's. But last night, rookie pitcher John Koronka was belted around early by the world champion White Sox. The home team never recovered from his giving up six runs in 4+ innings. Pen in hand, John Vittas saw the carnage first-hand sitting in his favorite spot, centerfield.

Atlanta fans like Jamie Kirby and Paul McCord aren't used to writing about ugly defeats in the Braves' run of 14 straight division titles. They do a good job of covering this season's unfolding nightmare in their blog, Tomahawk. Yesterday says it all. Horacio Ramirez gets smacked in the head by a Lance Berkman line drive. A shattered Chris Reitsma gave up seven hits-five runs in less than an inning. In fact, of the Astros' 13 earned runs, Ramirez and Reitsma gave up 11. Kirby writes, "The Braves are off tomorrow, so mercifully they won’t lose...."

Faithful bloggers of the New York Mets, Take the "7" Train is penned by Kevin Collazo and Shari Forst. They've had a lot to cheer about this season as the Mets have topped the NL East most of the way...now taking two of three on the road from the LA Dodgers. As Shari points out, Tom Glavine led the way on three day's rest. But her blog also spotlights rookie right fielder Lastings Milledge who helped seal the deal with a crucial seventh-inning homer.

It's always good to the get the local view of history being made. Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle obliges us here. A tight pitchers' duel all night, the game turned on a sixth-inning throwing error by Marlins' shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Schulman writes, "Ramirez grabbed it on one hop and made what would have been a fine throw had Manute Bol been playing first base."

When you're looking for down-home flavor in game coverage, the local newspaper is a good source. Stories that circulate on all of the national sports sites, most days, come from the Associated Press based in New York. Here, the Cincinnati Enquirer gives you the scoop from a southern Ohio point of view. The win puts the Reds within two games of the Cardinals, with two games left between the clubs in the series.

If you like your blogs lively (and who doesn't), you'll like Halos Heaven, penned daily by "Rev Halofan" who says, "I am so into the Angels that it is actually cramping my style." Rev draws 250 comments durning the Sunday night game aired on ESPN. He pokes fun at announcer Joe Morgan and his team's legendary slugger, Vladimir Guerrero... including a spoof of Vlad in an Apocalypse Now movie setting. Yet most of the blog's fans who commented early in the game predicted a pitcher's duel, not a 14-2 visiting team blowout.

Covering the exploits of the young Dodgers team this season are Andrew and Brian Kamenetzky, writers of Blue Notes, an official blog of the LA Times. The brothers keep it positive and make it fun for the Dodgers' faithful. For example, they quote winning pitcher Derek Lowe who smacked a double and scored a run, thereby raising his batting average to a "smokin'" .077. "I  don't think you can say you're on a roll until you're hitting over .100," said Lowe. For the home team, last night's win over the  Phillies was the definition of fun.

A lot of people question the cost and wisdom of the Astros adding Roger Clemens to their team mid-season at a real price of over $12 million. John Donovan of SI.com says it's okay to ask questions. The price is historically steep, true. But Mr. Clemens will sell a juice-box full of tickets for his hometown team. Within minutes of his announcement, all three minor league parks where Roger will pitch in June were sold out—standing room only.
