A fine Minnesota Twins blog, Twinkie Town, captures its team’s dramatic victory last night in an eloquent post by author Jesse. First, Jesse pays tribute to the indomitable Brad Radke. What follows is a passionate, riveting account of Minnesota’s historic extra-inning victory. If you have a minute, do read it. Sharing the joy this morning is Twins Without Spin by Mr. Baseball. He too chronicles the brave performance by Radke, a man pitching through obvious pain, but giving it all he had. Mr. Baseball says, “you can bet the healthy Twins would have felt rotten if the team hadn't managed to win.”

The Houston Astros have been flying high, winning eight straight and pulling within two games of the Cardinals. They're popping corks in Oakland. The A's seized the AL West crown with a win over the Mariners, a 12-3 blowout in Seattle. But after the bubbly is drunk, the sober task at hand is clear to Oakland fans. As Athletics Nation puts it, the A's need to do something the team hasn't done in a long time. That's advance past the first round of the playoffs. AN is the premier blog for the Athletics faithful who, regardless of the postseason outcome, are grateful for a shot. Or as author Blez puts it, "The A's are one of the eight teams in the majors that will have a chance to win the World Series...that's all you can ask for."

Even when you're a team flirting with last place, there are good reasons to put your spikes on and play hard. The D'backs beat up on Jason Schmidt last night and booted the Giants out of the playoffs. That's reason to cheer for beleaguered bloggers like Matt. His Diamondhacks is well-written, intelligent and witty as hell—the best kind of blog. Right now Diamondhacks has a new uniform color to talk about (red) and a Cy Young candidate to brag about (Brandon Webb). With Arizona playing spoiler and battling two teams for third place in the NL West, there's still a lot to blog about with six games to go.

Tigers' fans are celebrating today as Detroit secured its first playoff berth since 1987. That's 19 years of "wait till next year." Bloggers like Bill Ferris (The Detroit Tigers Weblog) are ecstatic but wary. Bill says, "The story isn't complete, but the first chapter is. Now let's nail down the division." Samara Pearlstein's Roar of the Tigers puts the postseason news succinctly: "one word: playoffs." Often spicing posts with wild, cartoon-like altered photos, Samara plays it straight today in covering the '03 to '06 worst-to-first celebration. Congratulations, Tigers!

MVP candidate David Ortiz hit his 51st and 52nd home runs last night in a Red Sox blanking of the Twins. Red Sox Forever pays homage to Big Papi with a side tribute to Josh Beckett's fine shutout. Author Peter N. notes that Boston is till alive (if barely) in the wild card race. The Joy of Sox is a popular, intelligent thread with an oft-satirical tone. On Beckett and the win, RedSock writes, "Beckett brings his too-seldom-seen A-game... and the Red Sox keep elimination at bay for another day." ... (more)

The NL Wild Card is now as wild as it gets. The Phillies have fought fiercely in September, winning 12 of 19 to tie the Dodgers. As outlined in The Good Phight, pitching is a big reason for the Phils' success. You first might think of Ryan Howard and the team's strong hitting, but this blogger argues quality pitching starts are the key. Prior to Philadelphia's win last night, the popular blog Beer Leaguer stated, "If the Phillies fancy themselves a serious playoff contender, tonight would be an excellent time to show it." Well, Jason, all of your fans now know they came to play.

The Twins appear to have put away the White Sox in the AL Wild Card race, this morning boasting a 4.5 game lead. You would think Minnesota fans are beginning to think division crown. But the truth is, on Jesse's Twinkie Town, they've been talking about taking the top AL Central spot for weeks. Even without Francisco Liriano, Twins' fans are confident about the quality of their team. With hitters like Justin Morneau, Jason Bartlett and Torii Hunter (not to mention catcher Joe Mauer), they have a lot to be confident about.

In one of the most dramatic games ever, the Dodgers beat the Padres last night by hittiing four home runs in a row in the bottom of the ninth. That tied the game. Then Nomar Garciaparra won it in the tenth with a walk-off two-run blast. Their team suddenly back in first place, Dodgers sites like Jon Weisman's Dodger Thoughts are both stunned and ecstatic. Weisman concludes the game could be the greatest ever at Dodger Stadium. Andrew at True Blue L.A. concurs, giving you a real-life, homer-by-homer dialogue direct from his living room.

"Deep into the September stretch run, something very big is different about this year's A's team. Something about 275 pounds big...with 38 homers and 105 RBIs...." That's a quote from Louis Gray's comic strip celebrating the sweep of the world champs this weekend by the Oakland A's. Click to to enjoy the comic story as a whole. An excellent example of a SportsBlog Nation site, Athletics Nation has a fanatical following—and as of today, they're definitely pumped for the postseason.

Get set this weekend for one of the biggest baseball showdowns of the year: Padres versus Dodgers in Los Angeles. First place in the NL West is at stake in this heart-thumping four-game set. Friars' bloggers are on top of the action starting with San Diego Spotlight by Rich Campbell. Today, Rich says, "Here we go, gang. David Wells vs. Greg Maddux with first place on the line." Writer Geoff Young's Ducksnorts is an upbeat, info-filled thread Padres' fans flock to daily. About his team's trip to LA,  Geoff says, "Them boys are hungry."

Lone Star Ball by Adam J. Morris is a broad-minded blog which follows the Texas Rangers, but also catches other baseball news. Adam congratulates Gary Matthews Jr. on hitting for the cycle in the Rangers' rout over the Tigers in Detroit. But Lone Star Ball also takes time to note the devastating injury to rookie pitcher Francisco Liriano of the Twins. Click in to see the fantastic baseball-related artifact Morris picked up on Ebay.

Is it hard to keep your sense of humor when your team has 90 losses in mid-September? Well, as usual, Craig Brown of Royals Authority proves he has wit to spare in reporting the mid-game brawl between Kansas City's pitcher and catcher. Click in and read the fictional dialogue of the "Dugout Deathmatch." Will McDonald of Royals Review keeps the faith in Kansas City too. About the battle last night between teammates, Will puts it deftly, "We've seen just about everything this year and most of it's been comically bad."

Lookout Landing by Jeff is a good Seattle Mariners blog still afloat even while cruising toward a disappointing season's end. The Mariners have played better in September after suffering a devastating 11-game road losing streak in August. Since, the team has swept Boston and taken two out of three from the Yankees, Angels, Tigers and Rangers. But now frustrating back-to-back losses prompt Jeff to announce Lookout Landing will henceforth look to the future.

As far as Oakland is concerned, the LA Angels just won't go away. The Halos have won eight of ten and keep pressuring the Athletics for the AL West lead. Halos Heaven by Rev Halofan keeps readers tuned in to every event, both major and minor. With seven games left against Oakland, Halos Heaven fans know the Angels still have a chance to pull off a miracle. Or as Rev puts it after Sunday's win, "We're heading in the right direction." ... If your team is not gunning for a playoff berth, playing the role of spoiler can be very satisfying. Tribe Report by Rick Lopez and Colin Lohse can gloat (just a little) after the Indians' blowout of the World Champ White Sox last night. In particular, Rick notes how rookie  first baseman Ryan Garko looks great at the plate since being called up for the second time. Ryan of Let's Go Tribe is a straight-shooter who, like all Cleveland fans, wants Travis Hafner back in the lineup pronto. The Tribe's potent DH leads the league in slugging percentage, and he's second in RBI and home runs.

After a doubleheader thrashing of the Braves yesterday at Shea Stadium, they should be celebrating in the streets of Queens. Atlanta used to be a mighty foe of the Mets, but no more. The Braves managed exactly one run in 18 innings. Amazin' Avenue knows the time is near for cork popping as the NL's New York squad has reduced Atlanta's magic (elimination) number down to a mere four. Amazin' Avenue's author, Eric Simon, keeps the blog rolling with sharp commentary in "Quick Hits" and "Game Chatters." Sign on and post your own diary entry.

Shhh! San Diego has won four in a row, holds a two-game lead in the Wild Card, but best of all, the team is only one game back of the Dodgers in the NL West. Lighting the way for Padres fans is Gaslamp Ball, a cheerful, faithful blog penned by Jbox and Dex. These guys don't just talk baseball, they're at Petco Park as often as possible. Yet they still have time to critique trades, such as the big one earlier this week that brought veteran hurler David Wells to the Padres. Chances are, every day, you'll also find a fun story or two in the Gaslamp Ball mix.

Novelist Anne Ursu has a passion for Twins baseball that is only surpassed by her readers' passion for Bat Girl, one of the most popular blogs in all of sports. Bat Girl is sassy, intelligent and just plain funny. Last night, for example, Anne laments the Twins' loss and lack of meaningful offense. Nevertheless Minnesota has regained the Wild Card lead, a fact celebrated in Twinkie Town by Jesse. Right now, Twinkie Town fans are pulling hard for rookie pitching ace Francisco Liriano to rejoin the rotation. After all, they need strong arms in the crazy AL Wild Card race.
